AZOOSPERMIA - CAN WE STILL HAVE A BABY IF MY HUSBAND IS INFERTILE?

What is Azoospermia?

Azoospermia is a rare condition in which there is no spermatozoa detectable on high powered microscopic examination of the man’s seminal fluid.

Examination process-

  • As this is a very important diagnosis to make, it can only be confirmed that the man has totally no sperms after re-examination of a second semen sample taken 3 weeks apart.
  • A thorough evaluation is necessary. This would include a complete medical history, a full physical examination and blood hormone tests.
  • Further investigations such as ultrasounds and MRI and genetic testing may be necessary.

Can we still have a baby if my husband is infertile?

The answer to this question is yes you can have a healthy baby, read below to know more………….

  • As there are no sperms in the semen, the couple cannot conceive a baby naturally, so adoption is an option.
  • Another possibility is the use of donor sperms to artificially inseminate the wife.
  • In certain conditions, even though there are no sperms in the semen, the man could still have sperms in his testes.
  • In this situation, sperm retrieval from the testes can be done. The retrieved sperms are then used to artificially inseminate the wife.

Depending on the quality and quantity of the sperms and the fertility of his wife, many cases of success have been reported with healthy babies born.
