Sperm allergy - Can I get pregnant if I am allergic to my husband's sperms?

Sperm allergy is a very rare condition.  But it is possible for a woman to be allergic to proteins in her husband’s semen.

In sperm allergy, the woman complains of a burning sensation after her husband has ejaculated into the vagina during intercourse.  The woman may also notice redness & swelling at the areas of the skin that came into contact with the semen.

In some women the allergic reaction is so severe that they may develop rashes, itching of the whole body & even difficulty with breathing.  Obviously, in these severe cases, their lives may even be endangered by having sex with their husbands!

Sperm allergy will not cause infertility.  However, in severe cases, as a condom has to be used during sexual intercourse, the couple cannot conceive naturally.  Hence, they may need to resort to artificial insemination / IVF (in-vitro fertilization) with sperms that have been specially washed free of semen proteins to prevent an allergic reaction.
