Professional Statement

Dr Chua Tju Siang graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School and continued his postgraduate medical training in Scotland at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. After attaining the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1998, Dr Chua returned to Singapore and trained in Gastroenterology at Changi General Hospital. Dr Chua Tju Siang was awarded specialist accreditation in Gastroenterology in 2002. In 2003, Dr Chua was awarded a one-year fellowship to train in diagnostic and interventional endoscopic ultrasonography at the Centre for Research and Education in Endosonography of Montreal, University of Montreal, Canada, where he received intensive and comprehensive training in endoscopic ultrasonography. In 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

In 2008, Dr Chua spent some time at the National Cancer Centre, Japan, for training in endoscopic submucosal dissection. He also spent some time at Jichi Medical University Hospital, Japan, for training in double balloon enteroscopy and endoscopic submucosal dissection. In 2009, Dr Chua performed the first endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric cancer at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore.

Dr Chua is actively involved in clinical research and has wide research interests ranging from Helicobacter pylori to advanced endoscopic techniques. He has published widely and has received several international awards. In 2001, he was awarded the Warren and Marshall Helicobacter Pylori Award for research into the link between various strains of Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer. The award was presented to him in Australia by Professors Robin Warren and Barry Marshall, both of whom are Nobel Prize winners in Medicine.

Dr Chua was awarded the Young Clinician Award by the Asian Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy in 2000 and by the World Congress of Gastroenterology in 2002. In 2004, Dr Chua was awarded an United European Gastroenterology Federation Travel Award to travel to Prague, Czech Republic to present his research findings on the use of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration in the evaluation of pancreatic cysts at the United European Gastroenterology Week. His submission was awarded Best Abstract for the conference. In 2005, Dr Chua’s work on the use of endoscopic ultrasound in the evaluation of common bile duct stone disease was presented at the Asia-Pacific Digestive Week in Korea and won the Distinguished Poster Award.

Dr Chua is actively involved in medical education and was a Clinical Teacher with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He has been involved in the teaching and demonstrating of endoscopic techniques, both in Singapore and in the ASEAN region. He has been invited to speak on a variety of topics relating to gastroenterology and endoscopy, both to the general public and to the medical profession. He was previously the Scientific Chairman of the Gastroenterological Society of Singapore. He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as well as the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr Chua is a Gastroenterologist with subspecialty expertise in the field of interventional endoscopy. This includes therapeutic endoscopy (including ERCP, EMR, ESD and EUS) and endoscopic ultrasonography (including interventional EUS procedures). He has a strong interest in diseases relating to the hepato-pancreatico-biliary system as well as gastrointestinal cancers.  Acknowledged as an accomplished endoscopist, Dr Chua is a member of the Quality Assurance Subcommittee of the National Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme of Singapore.

Dr Jane Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1997. She obtained her postgraduate surgical qualifications from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000, and a Masters in Medicine (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore in 2001. She was certified a Specialist in General Surgery by the Specialist Accreditation Board of Singapore in 2005, and subsequently admitted as a Fellow to the College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Singapore. Dr Ngoi graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1981 and was admitted as Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in1985, Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and completed Master of Medicine (surgery) (Singapore) in 1986.

Prior to entering private practice at Gleneagles Hospital, Dr Ngoi had held several posts as Medical Officer, Senior Tutor, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Consultant Surgeon at both the Singapore General Hospital and the National University Hospital in Singapore. Prof Abu Rauff obtained his MBBS in Calcutta in 1962, completed his M.Med in Delhi and subsequently underwent subspecialty training in the UK.  From 1985 to 1988, he chaired the Department of Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital, and later the National University Hospital from 1988 to 1992.  In 1990, Prof Rauff participated in Singapore’s first liver transplant at the National University Hospital.

Dr Lim Khong Hee graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1992. He obtained his postgraduate degree in 1998 and was a Clinical Fellow (HMDP) in Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery at the renowned Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane) in 2002. He was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the Specialty of General Surgery in 2004. He also became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore) in 2004.

Prior to establishing his private practice, Dr Lim was the Chief of the Upper Gastrointestinal Service and Senior Consultant in the Department of General Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
