Professional Statement

Dr Liew graduated in 1992 from University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He then continued his basic surgicaltraining in the United Kingdom and obtained his surgical fellowship, from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1997. He subsequently joined the Advanced Urological Training Program at National University Hospital, Singapore in 1998. He completed his urological specialist training in 2002. He is Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore as well as Fellow of Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh. Dr Liew spent a year as Clinical Fellow in Endourology and Laparoscopy under the mentorship of Dr Adrian Joyce, at St. James’ University Hospital, Leeds, United Kingdom. He has been involved as faculty and instructor in numerous laparoscopic courses and workshops. He underwent Robotic Surgery training in 2006 and has experienced in Robotic Assisted Prostatectomy using the Da Vinci Robot.

Dr Liew was appointed as Consultant Urologist in 2004 following his return from his fellowship training in United Kingdom. He established a comprehensive laparoscopic service in Urology at the Department of Urology, National University Hospital. He has performed various innovative laparocopic urological surgeries including laparoscopic prostatectomy, nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, revision of peritoneal dialysis catheter, ureterolithotomy, Boari flap reimplantation of ureter, and pyeloplasty.

Dr Liew started his private practice at Gleneagles Hospital in 2007. He is a fully gazetted Kidney Transplant Surgeon and member of the National Kidney Transplant Team, Ministry of Health, Singapore. Dr Liew has numerous publications in peer reviewed local and international medical journals and book chapters. Professional Statement

Dr Ho Siew Hong graduated from the National University of Singapore before obtaining his fellowships in surgery from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as being admitted to the International College of Surgeons. He completed advanced urology specialty training in Singapore and was conferred membership to the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

He spent a year in Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia as a fellow in the endourology and laparoscopy. Returning to Singapore, he served as a consultant urologist, initiating and developing percutaneous and laparoscopic urological surgery. In pursuit of his interest in advanced laparoscopy, he further trained in Institut Mutualiste Monstsouris, Paris, France in techniques of extra peritoneal laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

Dr. Ho is active in research and teaching; having numerous presentations and publications in regional and international peer reviewed journals. He is a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Urology. He is a clinical teacher and examiner for National University of Singapore, Nanyang Polytechnic and Edith Cowan University of Western Australia (off-campus).

He has lectured and performed live-surgical workshops in many countries in Asia. He has trained many urologists from Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines and India, under the SUA fellowship program.

Professional Statement

Dr. Kumar graduated from University of Singapore in 1977 and worked in Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KKH) during his housemanship year. After completing National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), he undertook his postgraduate training as a trainee in the University Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, KKH, and obtained his specialist degrees in 1984. He subsequently joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, University of Singapore (later called National University of Singapore), as an academic staff member and continued his career as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the department from 1984 - 2003.

In 1987, he was awarded the Overseas Postgraduate Research Scholarship by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia to pursue his PhD degree at Monash University , Melbourne , Australia . His thesis involved the study of the effects of exogenous gonadotrophins on oocyte maturation and subsequent fertility, using the goat-model.

Dr. Kumar has also undertaken sub-speciacility training in gynaecological hysteroscopy and laparoscopy at the Hysteroscopy Training Centre, Spaarne Hospital, Haarlem in the Netherlands, and at Polyclinique Gynecologie Obstetrique Medecine de la Reproduction, Universite Clermont Ferrand in France.

During his 20 year tenure with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, National University of Singapore (NUS) and National University Hospital (NUH), Dr. Kumar was actively involved in the teaching and training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors, and undertaking clinical and academic research, in addition to routine patient care and clinical work.

Dr. Kumar’s sub-speciality interest is in Reproductive Medicine, and he has been involved in the field of Subfertility and Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) since 1991. He was the Clinical Coordinator of the Subfertility and ART programs, and Head of the Division of Reproductive Medicine at the National University Hospital (NUH) from 1997-2001. He was also a member of the successful NUH team that produced the world's first babies born after transfer of zona-softened blastocysts in both stimulated and natural ART cycles. Dr. Kumar was also responsible for introducing professional counseling for couples undergoing ART treatment. He has also been actively involved in the teaching and training of post-graduate doctors in the clinical management of subfertility and ART, both locally and regionally. His research interests included the use of Natural Cycle IVF, GnRH-antagonists in ART and use of metformin in the management of hyperinsulinaemia in Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)-related subfertility.

Professional Statement

He graduated from the University of Singapore (NUS) in 1974, obtained the specialist degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) of London in 1981. 

Professor Ng started his first in-vitro fertilization program in Singapore in 1982 which resulted in Asia's first test-tube (IVF) baby, delivered in May 1983. He went on to develop the first SUZI (sub-zona insemination) baby in the world in 1989. This was a revolutionary technique at that time, whereby weak sperm was injected directly under the shell (zona pellucida) of the egg, to enable fertilization. The baby born was the first in the World from a micro-injection technique. In 1993, he did the first ICSI baby in Asia, which was an extension of the SUZI technique, whereby the sperm is injected directly into the egg proper. 

Professor Ng served in the NUS from 1977 to 2003 and concurrently in the National University Hospital (NUH) from 1986 to 2003 (from 1977 to 1985, he was in the University Unit of the old Kandang Kerbau Hospital). He obtained his professorship in December 1993, and from 1997 to 2001 became the Chairman of the Department of O&G in NUS and Chief of O&G in NUH. He was also Chairman of the Committee of O&G, Graduate School of Medical Studies in NUS from 2000 to 2002, during which period he was in charge of the O&G post-graduate training. 

He holds special interest in infertility (including male infertility), gynaecological laparoscopy and hormonal disturbances. He serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Health when there are issues related especially to infertility. He holds an adjunct professorship in the Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, NUS, and in the School of Biological Science, Nanyang Technological University, where he lectures Development Biology. 

Professor Ng is very active in research work. From 1997 to 2003, he was the Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Clinical Collaborating Center for Research in Human Reproduction and the WHO Clinical Collaborating Center for Maternal-Child Health / Family Planning Service Research and Training.

Dr. Li graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from National University of Singapore. He obtained Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. Dr. Li went on and received Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Fellow Academy of Medical Sciences.

Before starting his private practice in 2003, he was Director of Urology Centre at Singapore General Hospital and then Associate Professor and Chief of Department of Urology which he established in 2002 at National University Hospital. With his contribution to the regional societies, he was elected to be the Presidents of both the Association of University Surgeons of Asia and the Asian Surgical Association. Dr. Li is internationally known for his contribution in renal transplantation and has pioneered hand assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy in Singapore in March 2002.
