Professional Statement

Dr Tan Kai Chah is a renowned liver surgeon practising at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplants and has trained, practised and worked in the United Kingdom.

During his time in the United Kingdom, Dr Tan pioneered various liver transplant procedures for both adults and paediatric patients; these include the first ‘split-liver’ transplant, the first auxiliary liver graft, five combined liver-kidney procedures and two combined heart-liver transplant.

Dr Tan spent six years as the senior liver transplant surgeon in King’s College Hospital, London, where he trained 26 surgeons and performed more than 400 procedures. He also advised and helped implement the Irish National Liver Transplant Programme at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin.

In 1994, Dr Tan returned to Southeast Asia and set up his private practice, the Asian Centre for Liver Diseases & Transplantation (ACLDT), in Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore and the Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

From 1996 to March 2002, Dr Tan was director of the Liver Transplant Programme at Singapore’s National University Hospital, where he performed 72 transplants, both adult and paediatric. He also started a Living Donor Liver Transplant (LDLT) programme at SJMC in 1995, where he has performed more than 50 procedures before he left.

Dr Tan’s work primarily involves general hepatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation. In January 2002, Dr Tan and his team at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore were authorised to perform LDLTs. In April that same year, Dr Tan performed the first successful adult-to-adult LDLT in Southeast Asia. To date, the team in Gleneagles Hospital has performed more than 240 LDLT procedures.

Currently practising at Gleneagles Hospital Singapore, Dr Kevin Sng is trained in colorectal surgery, endoscopy, laparoscopic and general surgery.

Dr Sng went on to pursue his post-graduate training in surgery, accumulating work experience in many public institutions including Changi General Hospital, Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and KK Women's and Children's Hospital.

Under the Health Manpower Development Plan Fellowship by the Ministry of Health, Dr Sng trained in Korea under the distinguished mentorship of Professor Kim Seon Hahn, a world-renowned robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgeon. Dr Sng obtained his Certificate of Completion for the International Fellowship for Robotic & Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at the Korea University Anam Hospital in Seoul, Korea in 2012. Dr Sng was formerly Consultant and Director of Colorectal Service in Changi General Hospital (CGH). Adjunct A/Prof Dean Koh Chi-Siong was trained in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ferguson Clinic/Michigan State University, USA under a Ministry of Health Scholarship in 2003.  While he was in the US, he also received formal training in laparoscopic colon and rectal procedures.  He was also trained in functional anorectal work and is competent in endoanal and endorectal ultrasonography. He has been performing robotic assisted laparoscopic colorectal resections since 2008.  He is the only listed colorectal surgeon in Southeast Asia on the da Vinci surgeon locator.

Dr Aileen Seah Ai-Lin is the first American trained female colorectal surgeon in Singapore.  She had advanced training in Colon and Rectal Surgery in the University of Minnesota, USA in 2003 under a Ministry of Health Scholarship award.  Her mentors were renowned surgeons Dr Stanley Goldberg, Dr David Rothenberger, Dr Ann Lowry and Dr Robert Madoff.  Subsequently, Dr Aileen Seah was also trained under the proctorship of Professor Hironori Yamamoto, the inventor of the double balloon enteroscope.

Dr Leong graduated from the University of London in 2000. He obtained his membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2003 and started working in Tan Tock Seng Hospital since 2003. He started his Advanced Specialist Training in 2005 and passed his fellowship exams in 2008. Dr Leong was awarded the prestigious MOH HMDP scholarship to train under Prof Kim Seon Hahn in Korea University for Laparoscopic and Robotic colorectal surgery in 2010. Since his return, he has been passionate about advancing the practice of minimally invasive colorectal surgery.  In addition to laparoscopic colorectal surgery, he performs a repertoire of minimally invasive surgery for General Surgery.

Dr Leong is amongst a handful of local surgeons who practice Single Incision Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal diseases. This is a highly technically difficult procedure that confers excellent cosmetic results.  Dr Leong also holds basic and advanced certifications in Robotic colorectal surgery and is a firm believer in this being the next major advancement for rectal cancer surgery.  He is an avid teacher in advanced laparoscopy and routinely trains basic and advanced specialist trainees in laparoscopic surgery. He proctors consultant surgeons in complex colorectal cases regularly. Dr Leong is a proctor for haemorrhoid surgery using the new EEA® stapler by Covidien and the Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD) method. Dr Jude Lee is a General Surgeon practicing at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, who is particularly adept at Basic and Advanced Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery. His skills and expertise include cancer surgery, gastroesophageal and colorectal surgery, VATS sympathectomy for sweaty palms, hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, appendicectomy, and bariatric surgery. Dr Lee graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1997. Following that, he completed his basic surgical training and obtained his MRCS (Edinburgh) in 2003 and his Master of Medicine in Surgery in 2004. In 2007, he was admitted to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. Dr Lee has demonstrated great interest in research, publishing papers in peer reviewed journals and serving as Principal Investigator of the AHCC06 trial, a multi-centre, open-label, randomised controlled trial that compares the outcomes of two established treatments for locally-advanced liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) in order to determine which treatment is more effective. Professional Statement

Dr Lee Chee Wei is a general surgeon with about 10 years experience in the field. At his clinics at Mount Elizabeth Novena, Mount Elizabeth and Parkway East Hospitals, he provides specialised care for patients with vascular diseases. Patients will receive a comprehensive assessment including a Duplex scan in the clinic. Dr Lee is fully conversant in performing complex vascular operations such as open aortic repair, bypass surgery, peripheral angioplasties, endovascular repairs of the aorta and endovenous laser treatment of varicose veins.

Upon his graduation from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1995), he underwent basic training and received his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 2001. He completed his Advanced Specialty Training in General Surgery in 2005. Then, through the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Award, he attended a one-year fellowship programme at St Vincentʼs Hospital in Sydney, Australia where he trained in open surgical procedures as well as endovascular interventional procedures. Dr Julian Ong is a Consultant Surgeon at Colorectal Surgeons, Inc. (CSI). His areas of interest are in endoscopy and in minimally invasive surgery, particularly in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. Dr Ong also focuses on the management of all other colorectal conditions and surgery for perianal conditions. Dr Ong has performed many colon and rectal surgeries in both laparoscopic and open techniques. He is an accredited console surgeon in robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. In addition, Dr Ong also has an interest in the field of trauma surgery, being an accredited instructor in the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training program.

After graduating with a medical degree from the National University of Singapore, Dr Ong fulfilled his years of residency and proceeded to complete his fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He earned his Master’s Degree of Medicine (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Medicine. Dr Chan Hsiang Sui obtained advanced clinical training as a Fellow in the Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, USA.  He had his surgery training at Department of General Surgery, Lahey Clinic in Burlington Massachusetts, USA in 1996 where he worked as a Chief Resident in the Department.  On return from his training in America he practised as a Consultant Surgeon at the Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital and the Department of Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre.
